Shuzenji Monogatari (The Mask and Destiny) is based on a 12th-century Japanese legend. An abortive royal romance leads to an escalating series of tragedies. The central character is a Japanese monarch who would prefer to live a humble existence as a maskmaker. Unfortunately, events -- and destiny -- are against him. When first released, Shuzenji Monogatari was held in far lower esteem than such recent Japanese films as Gate of Hell and Samurai. Nevertheless, the film was selected as an entry at the Venice Film Festival, possibly on the strength of its excellent production values.

A young cellist is submerged by the sick love of his father, an acclaimed cellist, who does not let her be herself. Her father dies after the last concert of his daughter Mariel. This represents a break in her life because her possesive father planned everything, and she does not know how to face the world on her own. On a trip to Colonia, she discovers a person who sells trinkets to the tourists, who helps her take control of her life.

A teenage girl, Carly Beth, wishes for a scarier mask to wear on Halloween and finds one at an old store. What she doesn't realize is that the mask itself is evil and has the power to take control of the wearer.

Witness the world theatrical premiere of an ambitious trilogy exploring Hong Kong in flux by acclaimed local artist-filmmaker Nikki Lam. 　　This playful, expansive trilogy explores the artist’s evolving relationship with Hong Kong as the city undergoes its own upheavals. Reworking the visual language of Asian futurism, some scenes are shot on lush 16mm, immersing viewers in swoony Cantopop and late-night neon; other scenes move away from the nostalgic, stylised world of Wong Kar Wai. Working with actor Ching Ching Ho, Lam deconstructs the fictions of Hong Kong’s screen archive and her own attempts to capture memories of a disappearing homeland. This moving reflection on artmaking in the diaspora draws on collective memories to imagine possible futures.
